Wood Chip Boilers

How Do They Work?

Wood Chip Boilers are a highly efficient method of generating heat for space and hot water for all types of building.

Wood Chip Boiler technology has advanced in recent years to include automatic fuelling and cleaning and innovative storage methods.

The key thing is: It burns wood, which can be processed from many sources into a format which allows it to be fed easily and automatically into the wood boiler.

Why A Wood Chip Boiler?

Most UK buildings were designed with poor insulation and require a high heat input to keep them warm. This reduces the options for building owners to choose a renewable energy heating system.

Heat Pumps CAN heat a normal house with radiators BUT it will cost the owner a lot of money to do this as heat pumps can't keep up with radiators and rapid heat loss. Heat pumps are great for new builds.

Wood Chip Boilers and wood boilers per se are the best alternative (in fact only credible alternative) as they offer high intense heat which can heat any space provided you have wood to burn.

Wood Chip Boilers are also automatic feeding and sometimes cleaning, removing a lot of the hassle associated with more traditional wood fuel applications.

Which Wood Chip Boilers Do We Recommend

We have chosen the Binder range of Wood Boilers from Austria who have many years experience and have arguably the best product on the marketplace.

Their Wood Boiler range covers domestic to large scale commercial biomass applications and the technology is the very best.

Size and Costs

Our chosen brand of Wood Chip Boiler is one of the best in the world, Binder, and is available in sizes from 25KW upwards.

This range of Binder Wood Boilers is not the cheapest, but it is arguably one of the very best and their wood boilers come with full installation, maintenance , technical support and warranties.

Costs range from £19.5k for a 25KW boiler, including the equipment and installation

Important Things To Consider

Wood Fuel Source

This is high on the list primarily because we believe wood fuel should be locally sourced where possible to maintain it's carbon neutral status.

Another important consideration is the moisture content and storage of the supply source. With chips it is a bit easier to determine the moisture level and quality than pellets but it is still worth quizzing your supplier about this. Wet chips will cause you problems.

Space to site a Wood Pellet Boiler

FACT: Wood chip boilers are generally larger than other boilers. They also require storage and sometimes hoppers to automatically feed chips into your wood boiler.

Before you embark on choosing a wood chip boiler you need to think where you are going to put it - it may require the size of a garage to put it in.

Wood Chip Storage

If you are keen on wood boilers you will know one of the biggest headaches is storage. The good news is that this is the same for all wood fuels.

The trick with wood chips is to ensure you have space for your fuel and space for your hopper (automatic or semi). Another key here is that that the delivery truck will need access - not so much for bags, but certainly for blown wood chips which are direct into a hopper.

Can Wood Chip Boilers work with other technologies?

Wood Chip Boilers work alongside other technologies, particularly solar thermal. Solar thermal can provide hot water in the summer when you don;t need to keep your wood chip boiler on high and reduce the wood fuel consumption in the winter as well.

Where to get Wood Chips From

You can checkout the following wood fuel supplier website for a local supplier. It should be slightly easier to find a local wood chip supplier as many sawmills are looking into supply of chip.

You need to check they are sourced locally or at least from the UK and that they have proven quality and moisture content.

Next Steps

Go to our Contact Us Page and ask for a quotation. Like many of our systems we will require information about your home and current heating system or if it is a new build then a copy of plans.

From then we can arrange a survey, which for wood chip boilers has a cost attached - fully refundable upon installation
