How Can Freesource Help?
All of our technologies have a role in helping farms, but our first step will be to discuss your current energy use and how to reduce it (see the questions further down this page for some key areas to think about).
How Can Renewables Help Farms?
- Practical applications for every day operations
- Self Sufficiency - Off-grid
- Exporting electricity - a second income
Practical Applications
- Getting off-grid Power to remote locations
- Getting water to or from remote locations
Getting off-grid power to remote locations could not be easier. If we know your electrical load in terms of wattage and no. hours per day of use we can size a system with wind or solar power to give you a prefect off-grid solution. We have a range of solar panels, wind turbines and batteries which can be sized to any use. Check Out our Off-Grid Power page for more details.
Getting Water to or from remote locations could note be easier with our versatile solar or wind powered pump. The system can be sized to your needs for drinking water, water management or irrigation. Check out our Solar and Wind Powered Pumps Page for more details.
Generating Income From Renewable Energy
It is possible to generate income from selling or "exporting" your electricity back to the national grid. In order to do this you must have a grid connection on your site.
If you do not have one then you need to weigh up the cost of installing a connection and build this into your figures.
Once you are connected to the grid, we will be able to size a system and then arrange for it to be connected to the grid.
To sell your electricity you will need to register as a micro generator (we can show you how to do this) and arrange to sell to a power company, usually with some form of meter arrangement.
Self Sufficiency
It is possible to develop renewable energy systems which can give you independence from the grid and spply all the electricity and energy you need.
This can be achieved by working out your needs and then matching the available energy resources at your site and then costing out the options. We are able to offer you advice and supply single systems or combinations of energy sources which can do this.
For instance Solar and Wood or Solar and Wind can help with all of your hot water, heating and electricity from renewable sources.
Before You Start Consider These
Questions
Why do you need energy?
Have you conducted and energy audit and worked out what you need and how much it costs?
Can you find ways to reduce your energy use?
Can you train yourself and your staff to change their behaviour? |

Renewable Energy For Farms
Electricity
Solar Power and Wind Power are excellent options to help you cut your bills and reduce your carbon footprint.
Freesource are able to design and install wind and solar systems to fit your requirements and in many cases we can develop projects which are able to generate additional income by selling your excess electricity.
We can offer you Solar PV for any size of south facing project - on roof or on the ground.
We can supply wind turbines from between 1.4kw up to 250kw depending on your wind resource and requirements

Solar and Wind Powered Pumps
One of the most useful roles renewable energy can play for rural businesses. Solar and wind powered pumps are versatile and can easily manage the following uses:
- Livestock drinking water
- Irrigation for greenhouses, vineyards or crops
- Surface water management
- High or low head
Check out our Solar and Wind Powered Pumps Page.
Heating
Not so easy, but for certain situations businesses can heat their buildings with Wood or Heat Pumps. Wood fuel is generally the best room heating source for rural locations especially if you have your own source of wood fuel but heat pumps work well with underfloor heated buildings, particularly new builds.
The truth is heating is best solved with energy saving measures such as improved insulation and improved controls.
Hot Water
A very common renewable energy solution for hot water is solar thermal. This technology is very well established and very cost effective.
If you have large bodies of water to heat, such as swimming pools or for washing things, solar thermal can save you a lot of money.
