Renewable Energy Checklist
Investing in renewable technology can cost several thousand pounds, and in the short term it is sometimes cheaper to use normal fossil fuel.
However, fossil fuels are harming our climate and as they become more scarce the need for renewable alternatives becomes more essential every day.
Homes that use renewable technology will see the following benefits over a longer term:
- A ready supply of unlimited natural fuel sources
- Reduced impact on the environment
- A self sufficient lifestyle
- Cost savings on energy bills
To help you decide if renewable energy is for you there are a few things you should consider:
1) Why do you want to install renewable technology?
Do you want to lead a sustainable and self sufficient lifestyle? Are you concerned for the future of our planet? Do you want to save money on your energy bills? Choosing renewable technology for your home is a great way of meeting all these criteria.
2) Have you looked at other energy efficiency measures?
We can offer advice on ways to make your home more energy efficient. We can also put you in touch with people who can help with this.
3) Have you collected the information you need to help you make this decision?
Information such as your current energy bills, the ways in which your energy usage might change in the future and the location of your home is a real help in choosing the most suitable renewable technology for your home.
Or have you simply discussed your energy usage with your family?
4) Do you know your local planning authority?
Depending on which technology you choose you may be required to apply for planning permission. Knowing this information in advance is of advantage to getting the ball rolling. We can help find out this information for you if you are not sure who it is.
5) Have any of your neighbours expressed an interest in renewable energy or already have some installed?
This can often help with planning applications.
6) Have your considered your location?
It will be very useful to know where your house is situated when choosing the right technology. An exposed and windy site is great for turbines. A large area of water is necessary for water source heat pumps. A south facing roof for solar power.
7) We recommend you work out a budget before you investigate further and think in terms of the overall benefits not just cost
Remember that whatever your budget there is always some way to start making energy saving changes to your home.
8) Is your home a new build project?
If you are looking for renewable technology for a new build (as opposed to fitting out an existing property), it is useful to have drawings to scale to hand. This helps renewable technology experts work out the best range of options for your home.
By bringing in renewable experts from an early stage in your project there is additional benefit of being able to work alongside your builder or architect to design the best system.
9) Is it to save money or make money?
Thanks to the Feed in Tariff Scheme (FITs) you can now earn up to 7% return on an investment tax free for up to 25 years.
