Solar Thermal for Farms
It is inevitable that farms, especially dairy farms, will spend a lot of money heating water for pipe cleaning and wash downs.
Large-scale or commercial solar thermal systems can be installed using flat plate collectors which are very similar to solar PV panels. They can be installed on rooftops or even ground mounted on specially designed ‘a-frames’.
Freesource have plenty of experience with installing solar products on farms, and know the importance of handling the installations around livestock respectfully.
A solar thermal system is designed to replace your current method of heating water, and use solar energy instead. This can help cut costs considerably.
Not only can solar thermal systems help cut energy bills, they can also generate income. Currently, commercial solar thermal systems are eligible to claim the renewable heat incentive (RHI). This is a subsidy that pays a quarterly payment, depending on how much energy that is generated from the solar thermal system is consumed.
Currently the rate for a commercial solar thermal system is 8.5p/kWh. This works out that you could be receiving a 12% return on investment.
